1989 Ford Sierra RS Cosworth Up For Grabs At Auction

Updated: Sep 4, 2021

Lightweight, RWD sedan bringing heavy Euro vibes.

UPDATED 9/4/21: the highest bid of 18 submitted was $21,000. Unfortunately, the reserve was not met.

Although the Ford Sierra RS Cosworth is best known for its racing exploits in high-strung, be-winged RS500 trim, the model line had quite a few interesting vehicles on offer, including the rear-wheel drive, four-door Sierra Sapphire Cosworth. Now, this particular Euro-vibing 1989 Ford Sierra RS Cosworth sedan is up for grabs in the U.S. via an online auction.

Currently listed for sale on Bring A Trailer, this 1989 Ford Sierra RS Cosworth Sapphire doesn't rock the wild rear spoiler of the RS500, but instead presents in a more understated four-door body style, with a shell that's no heavier than the older three-door, but more aerodynamic. This particular example is draped in white, and comes with a tasteful trunk lid lip, plus 15-inch wheels. We're also digging the old-school-cool front headlight wipers.

The interior is awash in gray upholstery, with Recaro buckets holding front passengers in place. Standout features include power front windows, a sunroof, and a three-spoke steering wheel. The Pioneer stereo is apparently no longer operative. This particular Ford Sierra RS Cosworth is also notable for its left-hand drive configuration, and as such, it does not bear the "Sapphire" nomenclature of its right-hand drive counterparts, despite the similarities.

Lift the hood and you'll find a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder YB-series engine, featuring dual overhead cams and 16 valves. When new, this powerplant was rated at a little over 200 horsepower and 200 pound-feet of torque - not bad for a four-door grocery-getter in the late '80s. The four-banger connects to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transmission.

Four-wheel independent suspension and disc brakes complete the handling spec, with curb weight rated at a relatively low 2,756 pounds. Put your foot in it, and 60 mph would arrive in a little over 6 seconds, with top speed pegged at 149 mph.

Now, this classic Blue Oval is located in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida with roughly 54,000 miles on the clock. The vehicle auction is set to end tomorrow, with the current highest bid of five submitted set at $15,000. We'll update this post with the final selling price, assuming the reserve is met.
