Aiming to keep the fun of the original.
The Honda CRX was one of those classic Japanese tuner cars that enthusiasts adored, offering simple, front-wheel drive fun via very low weight, a small footprint, and sharp double-wishbone handling. Now, one digital artist is reviving the 1990 Honda CRX with a modern digital makeover.
Coming to us from Swedish auto designer Marouane Bembli, a.k.a. TheSketchMonkey on YouTube, this video takes the viewer through the process of modernizing the lines of the 1990 Honda CRX. However, as Bembli admits, that’s actually a rather tall order.
Right from the factory, the CRX mixed practically with a sporty flair, throwing in stubby proportions and boxy shapes that enhanced overall aerodynamics while maximizing interior space, all without adding much in terms of exterior dimensions.
The three-door’s roofline falls into the rear hatch at an aggressive angle, only to be cut short by a 90-degree cut into the bumper. The layout incorporates space for two passengers up front and loads of cargo room in the rear, plus very short overhangs.
Of course, one of the Honda CRX’s biggest claims to fame was its low curb weight, with the second generation tipping the scales at 2,200 pounds or less. Making that possible was a simple approach to the car’s design, something which carries over to the exterior styling, such as the row of rectangles used in the front fascia.
Although Honda released the hybrid CRZ in 2010 as a sort of spiritual successor to the CRX, the CRZ failed to capture the same simplistic, sporty fun of the CRX. So then, we want to know, what would a proper 2022 Honda CRX actually look like? TheSketchMonkey gives it shot in the video below.
