Automatic transmission now only offered on range-topper.
The 2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata has arrived, debuting with a few small changes and updates for the fourth-generation ND, including new handling technology and restriction of the automatic transmission to the range-topping Grand Touring trim level.
Let's start with the new handling tech. The 2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata is now equipped with something called Kinematic Posture Control, which will apply a small degree of braking force to the inner rear wheel under high-g cornering. The braking force is increased when throttling off a corner to mitigate wheel spin. As before, the 2022 Miata will once again employ double wishbones up front and a multilink in back for maximum driver enjoyment.
There's also a few new colors on offer, including Platinum Quartz Metallic paint, as well as Terracotta for the Nappa leather seats.
The power spec is the familiar naturally aspirated 2.0-liter Skyactiv-G four-cylinder, rated at 181 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 151 pound-feet of torque at 4,000 rpm. The Sport and Club trim levels are now exclusively equipped with the six-speed manual, with the automatic only offered as an option for the range-topping Grand Touring trim. And for those enthusiasts that absolutely must have three pedals, this refocus on the manual transmission is surely appreciated.
Also notable for enthusiasts is the Club model's optional Brembo BBS Recaro Package, which adds red-painted front Brembo calipers, 17-inch BBS forged wheels finished in dark gunmetal, and heated Recaro bucket seats, as well as a few aero bits with gloss black side sill extensions and a rear bumper skirt, plus a hand-painted black roof for the sexy MX-5 Miata RF retractable-roof fastback.
Power in the 2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata is put to the pavement through the rear wheels, with curb weight set at a feathery 2,332 pounds with the stick shift. Sixty mph arrives in roughly 5.7 seconds.
Pricing for the 2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata starts at $27,300. Look for it in U.S. dealers this winter.
