UPDATED 8/24/21: Subaru has confirmed that the new 2022 WRX will debut September 10th. Make sure to slide back to Tuner Fan next month for all the details.

UPDATED 8/4/21: event organizers just announced that the 2021 New York Auto Show has been cancelled. Subaru has yet to follow-up with when/where the new WRX will drop cover.

Subaru just announced the imminent arrival of the all-new 2022 Subaru WRX, set to drop cover August 19th at the 2021 New York International Auto Show. Included in the announcement is a fresh teaser video, viewable at the bottom of this post.

Under the mandatory hood scoop, the next-gen 2022 Subaru WRX is expected to cradle a high-strung version of the same turbocharged 2.4-liter flat-four FA24 engine found in the Subaru Ascent crossover, likely producing more muscle than the current turbo 2.0-liter FA20F’s 268 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. For reference, the Ascent is rated at 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque.

Interestingly, the new teaser video shows a tachometer with the redline set at 6,000 rpm, the same redline as the Ascent. The current WRX redlines at 6,700 rpm.

A six-speed manual will be standard, while a CVT will be offered for those folks who prefer not to enjoy life.

Based on the same platform as the current Impreza sedan, the new 2022 Subaru WRX will introduce revised styling that could draw inspiration from the Levorg wagon concept that dropped in 2019 at the Tokyo Motor Show.

The latest teaser video also reveals bright orange paint, black wheels, black lower plastic cladding, a rear diffuser element, and dual exhaust outlets.

Naturally, a go-faster STI variant will follow with all the usual goodies, producing upwards of 400 horsepower. Look for the 2022 Subaru WRX to go on sale later this year, starting around $30,000.
