Building An EJ Subaru Engine? This Is What It Costs

Baller or budget, choose your destiny.

With a turbocharged flat-four and all-wheel drive, the Subaru WRX and WRX STI are a lot of fun right out of the box. That said, the path to even-greater performance is well-traveled for these two rally superstars, and many enthusiasts opt to add additional ponies by modifying the EJ Subaru engine. Now, we're getting the lowdown on what it costs to do exactly that thanks to the following video.

The video come to us from the folks at MotoIQ, who lay it down with an in-depth 50-minute discussion. Granted, the video is quite long, but for builders eager to understand all the details and technical tidbits regarding a full EJ Subaru engine build, this video delivers.

For those readers who may be unaware, the Subaru EJ engine has been around in one form or another since 1988, but here in the U.S., it's most commonly associated with the Subaru WRX, which arrived stateside for the 2002 model year cradling the turbocharged 2.0-liter flat-four EJ205, boosted to produce 227 horsepower and 217 pound-feet of torque. The Subaru WRX STI arrived shortly thereafter for the 2004 model year, packing the turbocharged 2.5-liter flat-four EJ257, rated at 300 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque.

Naturally, the aftermarket has gone absolutely wild when it comes to tuning these two EJ Subaru engines, as well as their successors. However, while not everyone needs four-digit output with their WRX or WRX STI, it's exciting to think about the possibilities. That's where this video comes in.

MotoIQ breaks everything down piece by piece, going over the block, heads, bottom end, and so forth, covering each component and the cost required to build it. Along the way, the tech gurus also provide some interesting insights with regard to the quirks of the EJ Subaru engine.
