External combustion engine.
Big repair bills suck. Anyone faced with an expensive fix can harbor feelings of resentment, perhaps even anger towards the vehicle in question. Now, one Tesla Model S owner has expressed those feelings with more than 65 pounds of dynamite.
As featured in a recent video post from Finnish YouTuber Pommijätkät (or "Bomb Dudes," per a translation from Google), the story of the destruction of this 2013 Tesla Model S starts with owner Tuomas Katainen. According to Katainen, the all-electric sedan was "excellent" for the first 1,500 km (932 miles) or so, but the EV subsequently threw a laundry list of error codes, prompting the owner to take it in for service.
After about a month in the shop, Katainen was informed that his 2013 Tesla Model S would need a full battery replacement. As both the power source and the "floor" of the vehicle, replacing the bank of lithium-ion cells wouldn't be cheap. Katainen was handed an estimate of €20,000 ($22,645 at current exchange rates, 12/26/2021), and to add insult to injury, he would need to ask Tesla for "permission" to do the fix, per the automaker's policy on vehicle repairs.
Katainen's reaction was simple - "now I'm going to explode the whole car anyway."
Enter the bomb dudes from Pommijätkät. While there are a few ways to introduce a Tesla Model S to external combustion, Pommijätkät did it proper, parking the sedan in a quarry and ringing it with roughly 30 kg of high explosives. As a cherry on top, the video hosts dropped a life-sized dummy made to look like Tesla CEO Elon Musk out the side of a helicopter.
