Honda Teases 2023 Civic Type R Prototype

Front-wheel drive hero dials back the visual aggression.

Honda just teased the upcoming 2023 Civic Type R with a pair of images that show the next-gen sport compact fore and aft. Although the prototype is covered in a camo wrapper, the body lines underneath reveal a more subdued visual approach than the aero-galore FK8.

"Development of the best performing Honda Civic Type R ever continues," the automaker said with the release.

The 2023 Honda Civic Type R is based on the eleventh-generation Civic that debuted for the 2022 model year. Although the new four-door hot hatch is less aggressive than its predecessor in terms of styling, it's still very much a Type R.

That means it has a wide stance and big wing in back, with plus-sized wheels and slim tires, the latter of which appear to be sticky Michelin Pilot Sport 4S summer rubber. Large Brembo brakes are housed under the split-spoke rollers, while a trio of exhaust tips are centrally housed in the rear diffuser.

As for the powerplant, the 2023 Honda Civic Type R is expected to cradle the same turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder K20C1 gasoline engine as the FK8, albeit with a bit more output than the current model's 306 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque produced. A six-speed manual will be standard, while a dual-clutch automatic may be offered as an available option.

Critically, Honda says it's bringing the 2023 Civic Type R to the Nürburgring, which means the automaker may be hunting to reclaim its front-wheel drive lap record.

Look for the next-gen 2023 Honda Civic Type R to launch next year, likely priced around $40,000.
