Hoonigan Unveils Gymkhana 2022 Car As 1983 Subaru GL Wagon

Shoebox styling, fire-breathing performance.

The lunatics at Hoonigan have pulled the sheets on the latest Gymkhana smoke machine, revealing a shoebox-styled, all-carbon 1983 Subaru GL wagon. Roof rack included.

The high-powered brick will be driven by rally racer and motocross legend Travis Pastrana, who took the Gymkhana torch from Ken Block late in 2020.

Now, Gymkhana cars have traditionally been pretty crazy, with Block's all-carbon, all-wheel drive 1965 Mustang (a.k.a the Hoonicorn) being the most famous example. A few other specimens would include Block's new battery-powered Audi, the Electrikhana, and Pastrana's 862-horsepower wing-tastic Airslayer WRX STI.

That said, the 1983 Subaru GL Wagon is a bit of an oddball choice, all things considered. For those readers who may not know, the GL is the second generation for a vehicle known as the Subaru Leone, preceding the modern Impreza that gave us the iconic WRX and WRX STI.

However, it's also one of the first platforms that Subaru ever took rallying, and in a world brimming with insane race cars, we love the idea of stuffing an old-school wagon with power and killing some tires with it.

Outside, we spot classic '80s style, with loads of boxy shapes and hard, straight lines. Naturally, the stance is wide and low, with vents and wings adding the requisite go-fast style points.

Details on the build are still forthcoming, but at this point, we do know that the new Gymkhana wagon was built in collaboration with Vermont SportsCar, Subaru's U.S. rally partner. We also know it'll be light thanks to a full carbon-fiber treatment, and it'll definitely have some serious firepower under the hood, with a rumored 900 ponies on tap. All that go will be sent to the ground through a high-performance all-wheel drive system.

More details will likely be revealed between now and the full release of Gymkhana 2022, the filming of which will begin later this year. Stay tuned.
