Porsche Mission R Is An EV Turnkey Racer

How does 1,073 horsepower grab 'ya?

For those well-heeled would-be hot shoes looking for a quick and easy way to jump straight into high-end motorsport, Porsche's customer racing program is an obvious solution. Now, we're getting a preview of the future of the Porsche customer racing program with the debut of the Porsche Mission R concept vehicle in Munich.

The Porsche Mission R combines Volkswagen's growing all-electric know-how with Porsche's motorsport prowess to create a futuristic alternative to the 911 GT3 Cup car. Providing the motivation are two electric motors, one up front, and one in the rear. Properly unleashed, the Porsche Mission R doles out 671 horsepower in race mode, or 1,073 horsepower in qualifying mode. An 80-kWh battery is onboard with enough juice to spin out 30 to 45 minutes of track time.

The sprint from 0 to 62 mph takes less than 2.5 seconds, with top speed pegged at 186 mph. What's more, Porsche says the Mission R can go toe-to-toe with the 911 GT3 Cup car in terms of lap times.

Of course, being an EV, you can't splash an hour of laps into it with a can. That said, the 900-volt electrical architecture can re-juice from 5 to 80 percent capacity in 15 minutes. Not exactly something you'd expect to see in a pit stop highlight reel, but it's a start.

Other highlights include a carbon fiber roll cage that is integrated directly with the vehicle structure, as well as active aerodynamics that adjust to the EV's cooling needs to either bring internal temps down, or reduce drag for greater straight-line speed.

At this point, the Porsche Mission R is little more than a prototype. However, Porsche says that development will continue, and that a full race-ready variant may be ready to hit the track around 2025 or 2026.
