Subaru WRX Tops List Of Cars With Most Speeding Tickets

Rally-bred speed goes unappreciated on the street.

With a turbocharged flat-four engine and grippy all-wheel drive, the Subaru WRX was forged in the fires of rally competition, producing real-world speed in all conditions, on demand. Unsurprisingly, a combo like that produces plenty of speeding tickets, as well.

According to a recent study from insurance comparison website Insurify, the Subaru WRX leads the list of cars with the most speeding tickets in the U.S. Per Insurify data, WRX drivers collect 49 percent more speeding tickets than the average American driver, the highest rate in the country. Nearly 19 percent of all Subaru WRX drivers in the Insurify study had at least one speeding ticket on record.

The determination was made via an analysis of more than 4 million car insurance applications, with Insurify data scientists comparing the number of car owners with a speeding ticket on their record against the total number of drivers across 393 different vehicle models. The 2021 list marks the third year running that the Subaru WRX has slid into the top spot.

Interestingly, the Six-Star brand is well-represented on the Insurify list, with the Subaru BRZ in fifth place with 41 percent more speeding tickets than average, and the non-turbo Subaru Impreza slotting in at ninth with 36 percent more speeding tickets than average.

Sport compact cars are the predominate segment here, with the Hyundai Genesis Coupe (46 percent more speeding tickets), Kia Stinger (43 percent more speeding tickets), Mazda 3 (42 percent more speeding tickets), Scion FR-S (41 percent more speeding tickets), Volkswagen GTI (36 percent more speeding tickets), and Hyundai Veloster (35 percent more speeding tickets) also included. In fact, the only vehicle on the list that isn't a sport compact sedan or hatchback is the GMC C1500 pickup (38 percent more speeding tickets).

Subaru just introduced the brand-new fifth-generation 2022 Subaru WRX last month, pulling the sheets on a fresh turbocharged 2.4-liter engine with 271 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, as well as a new platform and several other updates. Naturally, we fully expect the speeding tickets to keep on a rollin' in, especially when the hotly anticipated fifth-generation Subaru WRX STI debuts.
