With a manual transmission, to boot.
U.S. Subaru enthusiasts will need to head south if they want to fulfill their dream of purchasing a factory-fresh, row-your-own, long-roof Subaru WRX, as the Japanese automaker is poised to launch the new WRX Sportwagon in the Mexican market with a six-speed manual transmission included as standard.
As spotted by The Drive, buyers in Mexico will be treated to the 'Rex wagon for the 2025 model year, packaging a turbocharged 2.4L boxer engine under the snout to deliver 271 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque through Subaru's iconic symmetrical all-wheel-drive system. The Mexican-spec 2025 Subaru WRX will be available in a few different trims, starting with the base WRX High 6MT model at MX$819,900 (around $48,600 at current exchange rates, 05/09/2024), followed by a CVT-equipped model at MX$899,900 ($53,350), and topped by the premium WRX tS CVT priced at MX$919,000 ($54,500). Although not exactly cheap, the manual transmission remains the least expensive option.
Of course, the WRX Sportwagon concept isn't entirely new, and was previously marketed internationally as the Subaru Levorg. Nevertheless, watching this dirt-churning, bring-it-all-with-you rally machine throw a party just over the southern border (as opposed to, say, Japan) does little to ease our collective enthusiast pain.
That said, we can't really lay all the blame at the automaker's feet. The decision to exclude U.S. buyers from the Subaru WRX wagon reflects waning interest among buyers that seem more interested in crossovers. What's more, Subaru representatives have previously noted a dramatic decline in manual transmission sales for the Impreza model in the U.S.
Even so, for anyone reading this particular website, the decision still stings.
Pre-sales for the 2025 Subaru WRX Sportwagon are currently underway in Mexico. Excuse us while we pout.
