Subaru WRX With Toyota V12 Engine Swap Takes Shape

Shooting for 1,000 horsepower!

In case it wasn't already obvious by our coverage of Mad Mike's four-rotor Mazda 3 wagon, or Team Apathy Racing's Saab-powered Honda N600 kei car, or Ryan Tuerck's F1-powered A90 Toyota Supra, we here at Tuner Fan love a good engine swap. Now, we're back at it with this crazy V12 Subaru WRX.

This wild new creation was dreamed up and pieced together by John Proulx out of Canada, who, as it turns out, has some experience when it comes to fitting Subarus with Toyota engines. Proulx's garage already contains a WRX cradling the legendary 2JZGTE six-cylinder, as made famous by the fourth-generation A80 Supra, and now, Proulx is diving back into the Toyota parts bin for the 5.0-liter V12 1GZ-FE.

Originally equipped by the 1997 through 2017 Toyota Century luxury sedan, the 1GZ-FE is rated at a mere 276 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque from the factory. However, by the time it's stuffed into his Subaru WRX, Proulx is shooting for four-figures on the top end.

Ambitious? You bet. However, the power potential is there, as demonstrated most famously by Top Secret founder Kazuhiko "Smokey" Nagata, who managed well over 1,000 horsepower with his 1GZ-FE-swapped A80 Toyota Supra.

In pursuit of his goal, Proulx will fit the V12 with two Garrett G30-770 turbochargers, as well as new rods and pistons, plus a MaxxECU Pro Premium standalone computer to make it all work right.

Fitment is, understandably, an issue, but that shouldn't be too much of a problem for the builder. After all, the 1GZ-FE is about the same length as the 2JZ, although the V12 is a bit wider.

In fact, per recent social media posts, Proulx has already managed to drop the V12 into the Subaru WRX engine bay, and frankly, it looks awesome. Harnessing the power will be a dual-clutch seven-speed automatic from a 2010 BMW 335i, which will feed a Ford 8.8-inch rear end. No more all-wheel drive in this WRX.

It's definitely an exciting build, and we'll keep on eye on it to see how it turns out. Stay tuned.
