Get ready for the smoke show.
The Drift League Round 2 is poised to smoke out Willow Springs International Raceway this weekend, with three Formula Drift licenses and $3,000 cash up for grabs to the top sideways warriors.
In case you were unaware, The Drift League is an officially sanctioned pro/am feeder series, providing a stepping stone for up-and-coming drifters to launch into the big leagues of Formula Drift. The series runs established Formula Drift rules and judging criteria, and even includes actual Formula Drift judges, with a Top 16 elimination-style bracket and traditional chase/follow tandem runs.
This year, The Drift League schedule includes two shootout events, the first of which took place back in May. Like the event set to take place this weekend, the May shootout offered up three Formula Drift licenses and a $3,000 cash purse split between the top three drivers.
Most importantly, a championship win in The Drift League opens up the opportunity to become a pro driver in the biggest drifting competition in North America. For amateurs wrenching in their garage waiting for that big break, this is the stuff dreams are made of. Just ask Rome Charpentier, who earned his Formula Drift license with a Drift League championship win in 2018, recently wheeling his Garagistic / Federal Tire BMW E36 to a third-place finish in the 2021 FD Super Drift Challenge in Long Beach.
The first round of the 2021 Drift League season concluded with Aaron Parker taking top honors in the No. 300 Mazda RX-7, followed by Shawn Illingworth in second place with the No. 73 Nissan 370Z and Margaritis Katsanidis in third with the No. 75 E46 BMW 3 Series. Now, The Drift League is set to return to Willow Springs for Round 2 this weekend. Naturally, Tuner Fan will be on the scene to capture all the tire-slaying antics. Stay tuned.
