Toyota MR2 Makes 1,100 HP For 7-Sec Quarter Mile - Video

Boosted Honda K-series behind the cabin.

Produced for three generations between 1984 and 2007, the Toyota MR2 is a fantastic platform for speed freaks on a budget, offering tight dimensions, two seats, and a transverse mid-engine layout feeding the rear wheels (hence the name, Mid-engine, Rear-wheel drive, 2-seater). The mid-engine layout, fully independent MacPherson suspension, and low weight make the Toyota MR2 well-suited for the road course or autocross, but the platform can also make for a decent drag racer. Now, we're watching as this second-gen W20 MR2 lays down more than 1,100 horsepower in preparation for a 7-second quarter mile.

Coming to us from FuelTech USA out of Georgia, the video is about 15 minutes long and documents the process of tuning the Toyota MR2 race car to produce four-digits at the rear tires. These days, FuelTech's projects primarily revolve around domestic V8s, with the shop recently slapping a pair of turbos on the new mid-engine Chevy Corvette C8. However, FuelTech clearly knows how to gets results from a four-cylinder as well.

This particular Toyota MR2 was pieced together by the Boosted Boiz, who have steadily chipped away at the car's ET over the course of several years. Now, the dragster is sporting a JBR Engines-built 2.0-liter Honda K-series stuffed with more than 50 pounds of boost from a massive Precision turbocharger. All that psi is run through a custom air-to-water intercooler, while the engine can spin up to 10,000 rpm. Output hits the rear tires through a sequential transmission.

Put it all together, and this Honda-powered Toyota makes 1,106 horsepower at 9,732 rpm on FuelTech's hub dyno, good enough to send the MR2 down the 1320 in 7.98 seconds at 181 mph. It sounds pretty wicked as well. Hit play to see for yourself:
