U.K. Shop Will Drop Tesla Powertrain In Your VW Golf

Up to 270 bhp on tap.

First rolling off the line in 1974, the beauty of the original VW Golf was its simplicity. Now well into its eighth generation, enthusiasts are still drawn to the earlier models for their uncluttered approach to motoring, leveraging the Golf's simplicity for copious customization opportunities. Indeed, the classic German nameplate has served as the basis for just about every powertrain and performance upgrade imaginable, and now, one customizer in the U.K. is taking that tradition into the future by offering VW Golf Mk. II owners a shot at all-electric Tesla power.

Based out of Harrogate, England, eDub Conversions started out as eDub Trips Ltd., self-proclaimed as the world's first all-electric classic camper for hire. The company was eventually rebranded as eDub Conversions, focusing on electric-powertrain swaps for classic Volkswagen camper shells before moving onto EV upgrades for the Porsche 911 and VW Golf Mk. II.

With a new Tesla powertrain under the hood, an eDub'd VW Golf Mk. II will have the goods to throw down 270 bhp - a sizable sum when routed through the front wheels of a tiny hatchback weighing less than 2,500 pounds, especially when all that muscle arrives the instant you touch the throttle. Alternatively, eDub Conversions can detune the setup to a more manageable 162 bhp.

Range per charge from the 53-kWh option is rated at 170 miles, with the onboard 70-kW rapid charger juicing the onboard battery pack to 80-percent capacity in about an hour. The shop is also offering a 35-kWh option for a little less range, but also less weight. Battery packs are mounted in the rear hatch.

Granted, the vast majority of VW Golf fans reading this site will no doubt prefer their ride with an exhaust pipe and massive turbocharger, but as the broader automotive world eyes EVs and preps for a deluge of new battery-powered models, it's comforting to know that the classics won't get left behind.
